A kitchen renovation goes wrong when the order of work and the measurements are not planned before anything is bought. Plan the layout, services and finishes first, and the build goes smoothly. This checklist keeps it in the right order.

What you'll need

Everything here is stocked across our branches.

Step by step

  1. 1

Plan the layout and the work triangle

Sketch the space with real measurements. Keep the sink, cooktop and fridge in a workable triangle, and leave enough clear bench space either side of the cooktop and sink. Decide the layout before you choose a single cabinet.

  2. 2

    Sort plumbing and power first

Where the sink, dishwasher, cooktop, oven and power points go decides everything else. Get plumbing and electrical positions confirmed — and any wiring or gas work done by a licensed tradesperson — before cabinets go in.

  3. 3

    Choose cabinets and measure twice

Pick cabinet sizes and configuration to fit the plan, allowing for appliance gaps and door swing. Measure openings for the fridge, oven and dishwasher against the actual appliances you will buy, not guesses.

  4. 4

    Pick benchtop, sink and splashback

Choose a benchtop that suits the budget and wear, a sink and tap that fit the cabinet, and a splashback that is easy to wipe clean — important behind a cooktop in a humid climate where grease and mould build up.

  5. 5

Schedule the order of work and the appliances

Rough order: strip out, services, cabinets, benchtop template and fit, splashback, then appliances and plumbing connection. Have appliances on hand (or their exact sizes) before cabinets are set. Confirm delivery timing so nothing holds up the job.

Tips for the PNG climate

  • Measure against the actual appliances you will buy, not standard sizes — a fridge or oven that does not fit the gap is an expensive surprise.
  • In the tropics, choose easy-clean, mould-resistant surfaces and a splashback you can wipe down — grease and humidity are hard on a kitchen.
  • Get plumbing, gas and electrical done by licensed tradespeople; the finish is only as good as the services hidden behind it.
  • Order appliances and check stock early so a back-ordered oven does not stall the whole renovation.

Common questions

What should I decide first in a kitchen reno?
The layout and where the services (water, waste, power, gas) go. Everything else — cabinets, benchtop, appliances — follows the layout, so lock that in first.

Do I need tradespeople?
